ILGA 23rd World Conference March 30 - April 3
Thursday March 30
with a plenary panel on International LGBT Cooperation
With this opening plenary panel, ILGA wishes to illustrate the many ways LGBT groups engage in international work, reaching out across borders to collaborate with people living a different reality. The panel first opens with experiences of cooperation between LGBT groups and follows on to give funding agencies facilitating this kind of work an opportunity to expose their views and work in the field.

Friday March 31
with a panel on
The United Nations and LGBT people. How long will LGBT rights be ignored at the UN?
This panel will look at opportunities for advancing the rights of LGBT people within the United Nations. The Brazilian Resolution led to a fierce debate at the UN Commission of Human Rights and led to 48 UN member states supporting sexual orientation as a human rights issue. Currently the CHR is in the process of being transformed into a new Human Rights Council – what does this mean for LGBT rights? In January 2006 the NGO Committee of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) summarily dismissed ILGA and Danish LGBT group LBL’s applications without debate; however more LGBT NGOs are coming up for discussion. What strategies can be used to ensure LGBT people get an official voice at the UN?

Saturday April 1
With a plenary panel on
LGBT Community and Islam
"ILGA aims to take a snap shot of LGBT community and Islam at this point of history. We hope to hear more from those LGBT communities who live in majority Muslim countries, and from those scholars who work and live in these countries as well as human rights defenders in these countries. ILGA is aware of the increasing islamophobia in the west and has always been careful to differentiate itself from those activists who failed to be sensitive on this issue. This is a panel for those activists and organisations who/which organise courageously in the Islamic World."

Sunday April 2
With a plenary panel on
Organizing in the Political Arena
Since the mid seventies in more and more countries candidates and elected officials have come out as LGBT. Currently the mayors of two major capitals in Europe are openly gay for example. How do campaigns by LGBT candidates mobilize LGBT communities? How does dealing with openly LGBT people change the opinions of other elected officials?
